La Union's food scene grew up alongside its surf. San Juan became Manila's weekend surf town, with a sandy beach break at Urbiztondo that is easy enough to learn on. The cafés, grills and bars followed the boards. Most of the places in this guide sit along the MacArthur Highway strip and the lanes running down to the beach, so you can walk from a morning session to breakfast with sand still on your feet.
Coffee is where La Union stands out. Specialty cafés and small roasters line the strip, and several bake their own bread and pastries, so it's easy to build a morning around a flat white and something warm from the oven. Ilocano cooking is well represented too: crisp bagnet, rice bowls, halo-halo and longganisa from the north sit alongside Japanese izakayas, a Greek grill, smash burgers, smoked barbecue and an open-air food park that fills up after sunset.
Prices start around ₱150 for a rice bowl at the casual spots and climb toward ₱1,000 a head at the sit-down restaurants and cocktail bars. Weekends are busy, because most visitors drive up from Manila on Friday night, so the popular cafés queue on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Come on a weekday and you'll have the pick of the tables.
Most listings are in San Juan and Urbiztondo, with more in San Fernando and Bauang to the south. Use the map to browse by area, or filter by cuisine, price and area.
