Siargao at Christmas and New Year: The Honest Guide

Here is the thing nobody planning a Siargao Christmas gets told. The two weeks around Christmas and New Year are the busiest and most expensive of the entire Siargao year, and they are not when the island surfs best. The swell that made Cloud 9 famous peaked back in September and November. By late December the wind has turned onshore.

That does not mean stay away. It means come knowing what you are buying. A Siargao Christmas is a party, a full island, a genuinely warm Filipino festive season, and a fair chance of rain in the afternoon. If what you pictured was empty beaches and glassy barrels, that trip exists here. Just not in the last fortnight of December.

This guide covers what it actually costs, what is open, when to book, where to eat on the night that matters, and who should shift their dates by two weeks and have a much better time.

Christmas gives a four-day weekend

Christmas Eve, Thursday 24 December, is a special non-working day. Christmas Day, Friday 25 December, is a regular holiday. With the weekend behind it that is Thursday to Sunday off using no annual leave at all, and domestic arrivals spike to match.

New Year gives five days

Rizal Day falls on Wednesday 30 December, and New Year's Eve on Thursday 31 December is a special non-working day. With New Year's Day on the Friday and the weekend after, that is Wednesday through Sunday. This is the single busiest stretch on the island all year.

One caveat, stated plainly: the 2027 proclamation has not been issued yet, so 1 January 2027 is expected rather than formally confirmed. New Year's Day is always a regular holiday, but the paperwork follows later.

How to use that

For the island at its most festive, target 24 to 26 December or 30 December to 1 January. For Siargao without the crush, the gap between roughly 27 and 29 December is noticeably calmer, and January calmer still.

Accommodation commonly runs 50 to 100 percent above normal rates across the Christmas and New Year window, and the better places sell out months ahead. That gap is the single biggest difference between a December trip and a March one.

Flights

The booking sweet spot for Philippine domestic flights is roughly 8 to 16 weeks out. Inside 30 days availability shrinks and fares climb whichever airline you pick. If you are reading this in September or October you are in the right window.

Where else the money goes

Rooms, boats and restaurants all price up. Motorbike rental stays broadly stable at ₱500 to ₱800 a day, though stock runs out. Our Siargao cost guide has the everyday numbers to build from, then add the holiday premium.

If you take one thing from this guide, take this. In the Philippines the big night is Christmas Eve. Families gather after the late mass for Noche Buena, a midnight feast that runs well past midnight, and Christmas Day is the quieter, slower one, largely spent recovering.

Practically: book your restaurant table for the 24th, not the 25th. And expect some places to close or run short hours on Christmas Day, because staff are with their families, which is exactly as it should be.

Where to eat on Christmas Eve

Book weeks out rather than days. Roots at Kaimana runs a set menu and is the island's fine-dining room. Lyma does French-Spanish for the other big-night option. CEV is excellent and more relaxed, and Bravo is a reliable beachfront sit-down.

Koobo's accommodation sits in General Luna and Malinao, which is where most people want to be over the holidays anyway. Walking distance to the restaurants, a few minutes from Cloud 9 and the boat jump-off.

Hostels and budget rooms

A bed at Kayan Siargao starts at ₱699 and these go first. For a private room, DGs Homestay is ₱1,500 and Yolked Suites ₱2,000.

Mid-range

The Loft Siargao is ₱2,500 and three minutes from the beach, Pahinga Villas ₱3,500, Hayag Crib ₱3,700 and Casa Mariposa ₱4,080.

Villas, which is what the holidays are for

Bamboo Moon at ₱6,500, Bamboo Castle at ₱7,800, Casa Tamaya at ₱7,500 and Hacienda Palmera at ₱8,500 across three bedrooms. The River Hideaway has a rooftop bathtub at ₱6,200.

December sits in Siargao's wetter stretch, roughly December to February. You will get rain. What that looks like day to day is less grim than the monthly totals suggest: tropical rain here arrives in bursts, an hour of heavy downpour then sun, rather than grey drizzle all day. Plenty of visitors report rain overnight and early morning, then a sunny late morning onward.

Plan around it rather than against it. Do the boat trips and northern rides early, keep one flexible day in reserve, and pack a light rain jacket and a dry bag. Our packing list covers the rest.

The surf situation

From early December the northeast amihan wind sets in and blows onshore at Cloud 9, so even a big swell comes in messy. The good news is the same wind is offshore at breaks facing the other way, and there is almost always something rideable if you know where to look. We explain that properly in Siargao in December.

Typhoons

Island hopping

Still the best day out, weather permitting. A tri-island tour to Naked, Daku and Guyam is ₱1,700 and boats fill fast over the holidays, so book a day or two ahead rather than turning up. See the Surrounding Islands guide.

Smaller, friendlier waves this season make it a genuinely good time to start. A one-hour Basic Surf 101 lesson is ₱820 and a kids' lesson ₱1,405.

Ride north on a clear morning

Magpupungko Rock Pools need low tide, Tayangban Cave Pool is on the same road, and Sugba Lagoon off Del Carmen is a full day. Go early, ahead of the afternoon rain.

Slow down

The wellness scene is at its best when the surf is not. Vinyasa yoga is ₱585, mat pilates ₱660, and The Valhalla Ritual ₱3,276 for contrast therapy and massage.

Come at Christmas if

You want atmosphere over solitude, your dates are fixed by school or work, you like a party, or you want to experience a Filipino Christmas, which is one of the warmest anywhere.

Shift by two weeks if

You are coming to surf. Late September through November is when Cloud 9 does what it is famous for, and the Championship Tour event at the end of October is now the peak of the island's year. See our guide to the Philippines Pro.

Come in January if

You want the good parts without the crush. Crowds thin from the first week, prices fall back, and late January into February is one of the most underrated windows of the year. Same island, half the noise, considerably cheaper.

Think twice if

You need guaranteed sun for a short trip. Three days in late December is a gamble. Seven days is fine, because the weather will hand you enough good windows to work with.

Is Siargao good at Christmas?

Yes for atmosphere, no for surf. It is the busiest and most expensive fortnight of the year, with a genuinely festive island and a real chance of afternoon rain. Great for a party or a family trip, less good if you pictured empty glassy waves.

How far ahead should I book?

Accommodation months ahead, flights 8 to 16 weeks out. Rates climb 50 to 100 percent for the holiday window and the better places sell out well before December.

Is Christmas Eve or Christmas Day the big night?

Christmas Eve. Filipino families celebrate with Noche Buena after the late mass on the 24th. Book restaurants for the 24th and expect a quieter 25th with some places closed.

What is the weather like in Siargao in December?

Wetter than the March to November stretch, but rain usually comes in bursts rather than all day, often overnight and early morning. Pack a rain jacket and a dry bag and plan outdoor trips for the morning.

Can you surf Cloud 9 in December?

There is swell, but the northeast amihan wind blows onshore and makes it messy. Breaks facing the opposite way work well in the same conditions. December suits learning better than chasing barrels.

Is New Year's Eve busy in Siargao?

Very. It is the busiest night of the year, with beach parties, bonfires and fireworks along General Luna. Restaurants and bars need booking.

Is January better than December?

For most people, yes. Crowds thin after the first week, prices drop and the weather is much the same. If your dates are flexible, January is the smarter call.
