Siargao Travel Guide 2026: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

Siargao is a teardrop-shaped island in Surigao del Norte, off the northeast tip of Mindanao in the Philippines. It's best known as the country's surfing capital, home to the Cloud 9 reef break — but the island runs well beyond the waves, with lagoons, rock pools, mangroves, and a string of small towns that each move at their own pace.

By air. Most travellers fly into Sayak Airport (code IAO) in Del Carmen, with direct flights from Cebu and Manila. From there, General Luna is about 45 minutes: a shared van runs around ₱300 per person, a private van ₱2,000–2,500, and a tricycle ₱500–800.

By sea. Alternatively, ferries cross from Surigao City to Dapa Port, about 20 minutes from General Luna — see the Dapa guide for schedules and onward transport.

Sort a rental or a transfer in advance so you're not stuck at arrivals.

The dry season runs roughly March to November — the best window for both surf and beach weather. For surfing, the swell builds from late August and peaks September to November.

The busiest stretch is the Cloud 9 Surfing Cup, usually late September to early October, when the town fills and room rates jump 50–100%, so book well ahead. The wet season (December to February) is quieter and cheaper, with smaller surf and the odd storm.

Most first-timers base in General Luna, the island's hub for food, rentals, and nightlife. Surfers often prefer Catangnan and the Cloud 9 strip, while Malinao and Santa Fe offer quieter, swimmable beaches a few minutes away.

For real seclusion, the north — Pacifico and Burgos — trades comfort for uncrowded surf and space. Compare rooms across the island on places to stay.

Island hopping. The classic day trip loops the Naked, Daku, and Guyam islands off General Luna.

Lagoons and rock pools. Swim the clear water of Sugba Lagoon, time the Magpupungko Rock Pools around low tide, and swing into the Maasin River.

Waterfalls and caves. Ride north to Tak Tak Falls, the island's only waterfall, or take the longer trip to Sohoton Cove and its stingless jellyfish sanctuary.

Book tours and lessons through activities.

A motorbike is the cheapest, most flexible way around (about ₱350–500 a day) and the best way to reach Cloud 9, the north, and the day-trip spots. Tricycles are easy to flag for short hops and cost ₱50–150 around town.

Rent wheels through Koobo rentals, wear a helmet, and watch for potholes and loose gravel on the rural roads.

Siargao's popularity has come fast, and the island feels it. Choose reef-safe sunscreen, take your rubbish with you, support local-owned businesses, and go easy on single-use plastic.

Siargao can be done cheaply. Take shared vans from the airport, join group island-hopping tours rather than chartering a private boat, and stay in hostels in General Luna. Eat at local carinderias and Filipino spots, and carry cash — many places don't take cards, and ATMs run dry.

How many days? Five to seven is a good first trip — enough for surf, island hopping, and a couple of day trips.

Is it safe? Yes, Siargao is generally safe. Take normal care with valuables and ride carefully.

Cash or card? Bring cash. Withdraw in General Luna or Dapa, as ATMs run dry and cards aren't widely accepted.
