The Philippines Pro at Cloud 9: Siargao's First WSL Championship Tour Event

For thirty years, Cloud 9 has been the wave Filipino surfers grew up watching and the rest of the world grew up hearing about. From 31 October to 10 November 2026, the World Surf League Championship Tour arrives to surf it. It is the first CT event ever held in the Philippines.

This is not a qualifying event or an exhibition. The Philippines Pro is Stop 11 on the 2026 Championship Tour, the top tier of professional surfing, and it lands with the world title race in its closing stretch before the season finishes at Pipe. The surfers arriving in Catangnan are the best on the planet, and they will be competing a few metres off the boardwalk you can walk out on for free.

The event was upgraded from a QS 6,000 to full CT status for the 2026 and 2027 seasons. If you have been searching for the Siargao International Surfing Cup, this is it. Same wave, same organisers, different name and a much bigger deal.

Here is what is happening, who to watch, how to actually see it, and what it means for anyone planning to be on the island that fortnight.

The story worth knowing before you watch a single heat belongs to a local.

John Mark "Marama" Tokong is from here. He has been announced as the event wildcard for 2026, which puts him in the draw alongside the world's top 24 men. His record at Cloud 9 is the reason: nine starts at his home event, five finals appearances and four victories, in 2015, 2019, 2022 and 2023. People on the island call him the King of Cloud 9, and the nickname is earned rather than given.

In 2023 he became the first Filipino surfer to qualify for the WSL Challenger Series. He is 29. He has spent his whole life reading this reef.

"It was honestly hard to believe at first; getting the chance to compete in a CT event at my home break is one of my biggest dreams," Tokong told the WSL when the wildcard was announced. "We've always known how special this wave is, and now the whole world gets to see it. It's a proud moment for the local community, especially for all the kids growing up here who dream of surfing at the highest level."

He also offered the most useful piece of analysis anyone has given about the event: "The CT surfers are all incredible, but this wave has its own personality. The surfers who adapt quickly and make smart decisions will have a big advantage."

The window

31 October to 10 November 2026. Like all CT events this is a waiting period rather than a fixed schedule, not eleven days of continuous competition. Organisers call each day on and off depending on swell and wind, which means the final day is decided by the ocean and usually announced the evening before.

The field

24 men and 16 women, a reduced field of world title contenders chasing ranking points before the season ends at the Pipe Masters in December. Stakes are high, which tends to make for better surfing.

What this means for you day to day

If the forecast is good, they surf and the boardwalk fills. If it is flat or blown out, they call a lay day and the pros go and do exactly what you would do: eat, ride around the island, surf somewhere else. Lay days are not wasted days. They are the days you might end up in the queue at Shaka behind someone ranked in the world's top ten.

If you are here to surf yourself

Cloud 9 will be closed to the public during competition hours, and the surrounding breaks will be busier than usual. Plan to surf early, surf elsewhere, or take the fortnight as a watching trip. From the boardwalk, for free

This is the part that surprises people. The Cloud 9 boardwalk runs straight out over the reef to the peak, and viewing there has always been free. No ticket has been announced for the Philippines Pro. You walk out and you are standing metres from where the heats are happening, which is closer than almost any stadium sport lets you get.

Expect it to be crowded and expect sections to be closed off for competitors and officials. Get there early. The light is better before mid-morning anyway.

What to bring

There is no shade on the boardwalk and the reef throws the sun straight back at you. Water, a hat and reef-safe sunscreen are not optional across a full day of heats. Bring cash, because the stalls and cafés near the boardwalk do not take cards.

If you would rather not stand in a crowd

The cafés along the Cloud 9 strip have a view and a roof, and several will run the webcast. Arriving at seven and taking a table beats arriving at ten and standing.

Watching from anywhere else

CT events are broadcast free on the WSL site and app, so you can follow it from a café in General Luna or from home. Check the day's call the night before, because lay days are common and there is no point riding up for nothing.

Contest fortnight is the busiest and most expensive stretch of the Siargao year, and 2026 more so than any year before it. Accommodation across General Luna and Catangnan commonly runs 50 to 100 percent above normal rates for this window, and the good places go months ahead.

If you are reading this in September or October and you do not have a bed booked, book today rather than this week. That is not a sales line, it is what the calendar does every contest season, and this one has more demand behind it than any previous edition.

Closest to the action

Casa Oro Villas at Cloud 9 is the nearest Koobo listing to the boardwalk at ₱5,800 with its own pool. Libertad Surf Villa is ₱7,500 on a private beachfront.

In General Luna, five minutes south

More choice and easier for food and nightlife. The Loft Siargao is ₱2,500, Hayag Crib ₱3,700, Bamboo Temple ₱5,700 and Bamboo Moon ₱6,500. A bed at Kayan Siargao is ₱699 if you are travelling cheap.

For a group

Hacienda Palmera sleeps a group across three bedrooms at ₱8,500, and Allure Villas is ₱6,000.

Sort transport at the same time. A Honda Click 125 is ₱550 a day and rental stock also thins out that fortnight. Browse all stays and all rentals.

Plan for at least a few lay days across the window. They are the days most visitors waste and the days the island is quietest, because everyone else is waiting by the boardwalk.

Go island hopping

The boats still run. A tri-island tour to Naked, Daku and Guyam is ₱1,700, and early November usually still has decent water clarity. See the Surrounding Islands guide.

Ride north

Magpupungko Rock Pools in Pilar only work around low tide, so check a chart the night before. Tayangban Cave Pool is on the same road, and Sugba Lagoon off Del Carmen is the other obvious full day.

Surf somewhere quieter

The north is the escape while the south is full. Pacifico and Burgos are over an hour away and will barely notice the event is on.

Eat well

Book ahead that fortnight, because the good rooms fill. Bayani at Harana for Filipino, Lyma or Roots for a bigger night, Kawayan Gourmand for breakfast 200m from the boardwalk. The restaurant guide has the rest.

Yes, if you want to see the best surfing of your life

A CT event at a wave like this is rare, free to watch and close enough to hear. If you surf at all, or have any interest in the sport, this is the single best week to be on Siargao in its history.

Probably not, if you came to surf Cloud 9 yourself

It will be closed during heats and mobbed outside them. Come a fortnight earlier or later and you will get a far better trip. Late September into mid-October is peak swell without the circus.

Think carefully, if you wanted a quiet beach holiday

This is the busiest the island has been. Prices are up, tables need booking and the boardwalk is a crowd. Alegria and Santa Fe stay calm, but General Luna will not be restful.

If you are bringing kids

It works, with planning. The boardwalk is long and busy and there are no barriers to speak of, so small children need holding onto. Our Siargao with kids guide covers the practical side.

Fly into Sayak Airport at Del Carmen, about 45 minutes from General Luna, or come by ferry from Surigao City into Dapa. Flights that fortnight will be the most expensive of the year outside Christmas, and seats sell out.

The booking sweet spot for Philippine domestic flights is roughly 8 to 16 weeks out, so this is already tight. If you are coming, book the flight before the bed, because the flight is the harder constraint.

When is the WSL event at Cloud 9?

Is it the same as the Siargao International Surfing Cup?

Yes. The event has been renamed the Philippines Pro and upgraded from a QS 6,000 to a Championship Tour stop for 2026 and 2027. Same wave, same place on the calendar, higher tier.

Do you need a ticket to watch?

No ticket has been announced. Viewing from the Cloud 9 boardwalk has always been free. Expect crowds and some sections closed off for competitors and officials.

Who is the Filipino surfer competing?

John Mark "Marama" Tokong, from Siargao, announced as the 2026 event wildcard. He has won this event four times, in 2015, 2019, 2022 and 2023, and in 2023 became the first Filipino to qualify for the WSL Challenger Series.

Can I surf Cloud 9 during the contest?

Not during competition hours. Outside them it will be crowded. If surfing is your priority, come a couple of weeks either side, or surf the northern breaks while the event runs.
