Malinao Travel Guide – Quiet Beaches & Boutique Beachfront Stays

Malinao is a barangay of General Luna, set just north of the town centre between GL proper and Catangnan. It is the quieter, more residential side of the main tourist area: close to everything, a step removed from the busiest part of Tourism Road.

The appeal is the balance. You are minutes from Cloud 9 and the GL restaurants, but Malinao itself has a calmer beachfront, a cluster of good cafés, and several boutique stays that trade nightlife for quiet.

The beach here is the practical reason many people choose it. Where the shoreline in front of GL town is reef flat, Malinao gives you sand and water you can actually get into on a mid to high tide. It is not a swimming pool, and it still dries back at low tide, but it is the closest usable beach to the town centre.

Malinao is also where the island's high end sits. Nay Palad Hideaway, the all-inclusive resort that put Siargao on luxury lists, is here, and a scattering of design-led villas has followed.

Malinao suits couples, longer-stay visitors, and remote workers who want a short ride to everything without living on top of it. It is a good pick for a second trip to Siargao, once you know you would rather sleep than queue for a table.

It also suits families better than GL proper. The water is calmer, the roads are quieter, and you are still five minutes from a clinic and a supermarket. Our guide to Siargao with kids covers that in more detail.

It suits you less if you want to walk home from a bar, or if you want restaurant choice on your doorstep. Malinao has a handful of good places, not a strip. You will ride into GL most evenings.

From General Luna town

Three to five minutes north along Tourism Road. A tricycle is ₱50 to ₱80 and it is a comfortable 20-minute walk if you are not carrying much.

From Sayak Airport, Del Carmen

About 40 to 45 minutes. Shared vans are around ₱300 per person and will drop in Malinao on request. A private van is ₱2,000 to ₱2,500.

From Dapa Port

Roughly 25 minutes. Vans and multicabs charge ₱100 to ₱150 per person, a private tricycle ₱400 to ₱600.

Having your own ride makes Malinao work better than relying on tricycles. A Honda Beat is ₱500 a day, a Yamaha Fazzio ₱600, or compare all rentals.

Malinao spreads along the coast road rather than clustering, so distances between stays and cafés are longer than they look on a map. Most people rent a scooter for the week.

Tricycles pass along the main road regularly during the day and thin out after about 10pm, which is worth knowing if you are eating in GL. Agree the fare before you get in. Expect ₱50 to ₱100 into town.

Walking works for short hops along the beach road and is pleasant early or after five. Midday sun on the concrete is punishing and there is little shade. Compare motorbike and car rentals if you would rather not depend on drivers.

Malinao is where the island's boutique and villa end concentrates. Most stays here are small, and they book out further ahead than GL's hostels.

Villas and design-led stays

The bamboo houses are the most distinctive option on Koobo: Bamboo Moon at ₱6,500, The Bamboo House at ₱5,800 and Bamboo Castle at ₱7,800. Casa Talisay is ₱5,500 and Villa Singko ₱6,500.

Mid-range

Casa Alegria at ₱3,820 and Casa Mariposa at ₱4,080 sit in the useful middle. Zen Treehouse is ₱4,000 and Pahinga Villas ₱3,500.

For groups and families

Hacienda Palmera sleeps a group across three bedrooms at ₱8,500, and Casa Tamaya is ₱7,500. The River Hideaway has two units at ₱6,200, one with a flying net over the water.

The luxury end

Nay Palad Hideaway is the island's best-known all-inclusive and sits on the Malinao beachfront. It sells directly rather than through booking platforms and is a different price bracket to everything above.

Malinao has a handful of good places rather than a strip, which is part of why people like it. For anything beyond that, GL town is five minutes south.

Coffee and casual

Little Rotti is the cheap, fast plate most locals default to. Lunares Cafe handles breakfast and the laptop hours, and The Hub by Lokal is the co-working and coffee option if you are working from here.

On the beach

Abukay Beach House is the beachfront sit-down worth planning a sunset around, and Lagkaw Bar and Grill is the low-key grill and drinks option a short walk along the sand.

The beach

The main event, and the reason to stay here rather than GL. Sand rather than reef flat, and swimmable on a mid to high tide. Check the tide before you plan an afternoon in the water, because it pulls back a long way at low.

Sunset

Malinao faces the right way for it and the beachfront bars are set up accordingly. It is a quieter version of the same sunset you would queue for in GL.

Yoga, pilates and recovery

The wellness scene clusters around this end of GL. Vinyasa yoga is ₱585 a class, mat pilates ₱660, barre ₱770 and group reformer ₱1,320. An embodied breathwork session is ₱1,170.

Surf and boats from here

Cloud 9 is a five-minute ride north, and the island-hopping jump-off is five minutes south. A tri-island tour is ₱1,700 per person and a beginner surf lesson ₱820 for an hour. Staying in Malinao costs you nothing in access.

Day trips

Maasin River and the palm swing are about 15 minutes away, and Magpupungko is 45 minutes east around low tide.

Malinao is not a surf spot in its own right. It is a place to sleep near the surf, which for a lot of people is the better arrangement.

Cloud 9 and Tuason Point are five minutes north in Catangnan. Quiksilver, also called Cemetery, sits between Malinao and GL town and is one of the two common beginner spots. Jacking Horse, the other, is a short paddle from the Cloud 9 boardwalk.

For beach days

March to June. Settled weather, the clearest water, and the calmest sea for swimming off the beach. This is the window when Malinao's main advantage over GL actually shows.

For surf

September to November, when swell peaks at Cloud 9 five minutes north. Malinao's own beach gets choppier in the same period.

Contest weeks

The Philippines Pro runs at Cloud 9 from 31 October to 10 November 2026 as a World Surf League Championship Tour stop. Malinao is far enough out to stay liveable and close enough to walk into the noise, which makes it a smart base for that fortnight. Prices still climb, so book early.

Wet season

December to February brings rain and grey water, and the beach is less of a draw. Prices drop and the area empties out. Our month-by-month guide has the detail.

Tides matter here

More than anywhere else in GL. Malinao's beach is genuinely good on a mid to high tide and mostly walkable flats at low. Check a tide chart the night before if swimming is the plan.

Cash

There is no ATM in Malinao. Draw what you need on Tourism Road in GL, and expect the smaller cafés and the beach grills to be cash only.

Getting home at night

Tricycles thin out after about 10pm along the beach road. If you are eating in GL, either take your own ride or agree a pickup time with a driver before you go in.

Sandflies

The beach here gets nipa bugs around dawn and dusk, particularly in the wetter months. Repellent handles it, and it is worth having if you are staying beachfront.

Connectivity

Signal is fine and the co-working cafés have reliable wifi. Brownouts affect this side of GL the same as everywhere. Our brownout guide lists places with generators.

Is Malinao a separate place from General Luna?

No. Malinao is one of General Luna's 19 barangays, sitting between the town centre and Catangnan. When people say they are staying in GL, Malinao is often what they mean.

Can you swim at Malinao beach?

Yes, on a mid to high tide. It is the closest genuinely swimmable beach to General Luna town, which is its main advantage. At low tide the water pulls back over flats and you are wading rather than swimming.

Is Malinao better than staying in General Luna town?

Better if you want quiet, a usable beach and a nicer place to sleep. Worse if you want restaurant choice and to walk home from dinner. It is a three-minute ride between them, so neither choice locks you out of anything.

Do you need a motorbike in Malinao?

More than in GL town, yes. Stays here are spread along the coast road and tricycles thin out at night. A scooter at ₱500 to ₱600 a day makes the area work properly.

Is Malinao good for families?
