Catangnan Travel Guide – Cloud 9 Surf, Boardwalk & Beach Cafés

Catangnan is the barangay of General Luna that holds Cloud 9, the reef break that made Siargao famous. It sits a few minutes north of GL's town centre, where Tourism Road meets the coast, and it is where most of the island's surf life happens.

The landmark is the Cloud 9 boardwalk, a concrete jetty over the reef with a viewing tower, built for the international surf contests. Around it sits a tight cluster of surf resorts, cafés and the breaks that draw surfers from across the world.

From 31 October to 10 November 2026, this stretch of reef hosts the Philippines Pro, a World Surf League Championship Tour event. Cloud 9 was upgraded from a QS 6,000 for the 2026 and 2027 seasons, which makes Catangnan the centre of world professional surfing for two weeks a year.

This is the most surf-focused part of Siargao. Mornings start before sunrise, the cafés open at six, and conversation is mostly about tide and swell. If that sounds like your week, stay here. If it does not, GL town is a five-minute ride away and has more variety.

Catangnan suits surfers above everyone else, particularly intermediates and up who want to be able to check the wave from bed. It also suits early risers who like the boardwalk at first light and people who would rather have a quiet café than a beach bar.

It suits you less if you want nightlife, restaurant choice, or a beach you can swim off. The coast here is reef, not sand, and it dries out at low tide. Non-surfing partners often find the area thin after a couple of days and end up commuting to General Luna anyway.

That said, it's definitely worth staying in Catangnan if you want to give surfing a try. The beginner breaks are a short paddle from the beach, and there are an abundance of SISA certified instructors who can arrange a lesson near Cloud 9.

From General Luna town

A 5 to 10 minute ride north along Tourism Road. A tricycle costs ₱50 to ₱100, or a few minutes on your own motorbike. Walking takes about 40 minutes and is fine early, less fine at midday.

From Sayak Airport, Del Carmen

About 45 minutes by road. Shared vans run around ₱300 per person and will drop at Cloud 9 if you ask. A private van is ₱2,000 to ₱2,500 and a tricycle ₱500 to ₱800.

From Dapa Port

Roughly 25 minutes via GL. Tricycles and habal-habal make the trip for ₱250 to ₱350.

The simplest way to come and go is your own ride. A Honda Click 125 is ₱550 a day and a Honda Beat ₱500, or compare all rentals.

Catangnan is small and mostly walkable. The boardwalk, the cafés and many of the surf resorts sit within a short stroll of each other along the Cloud 9 strip.

For anything beyond that, GL town, Magpupungko, the quieter beaches, you will want a motorbike or a tricycle. Tricycles are easy to flag on Tourism Road. If you are carrying a board, most drivers will rack it, but a rented scooter with a board bracket is simpler.

One practical note: the stretch of road between GL and Cloud 9 collects sand and has potholes that appear after heavy rain. Ride it slowly at night. Compare motorbike and car rentals.

Staying in Catangnan buys you proximity to the wave and little else. That trade is worth it for surfers and rarely worth it for anyone else.

Right by the break

Casa Oro Villas at Cloud 9 is the closest Koobo listing to the boardwalk, at ₱5,800 for a tiny villa with its own pool. Beyond that, Catangnan is dominated by surf resorts and hostels that sell directly, clustered along the strip between the boardwalk and Tuason Point.

Ten minutes away, with more choice

Most people end up basing in GL and riding up for dawn patrol. That opens up the full range: The Loft Siargao at ₱2,500, Hayag Crib at ₱3,700, or Bamboo Temple at ₱5,700 if you want something with more character. A bed at Kayan Siargao is ₱699 if you are counting pesos.

Catangnan eats early. Cafés open around six for the dawn crowd and the strip is quiet again by nine at night. The choice is narrower than GL but the quality is high.

Before and after a surf

Shaka is the smoothie-bowl and breakfast institution and gets a queue by eight. Kawayan Gourmand is about 200m from the boardwalk and does the best pastry on the island.

Lunch and dinner on the strip

Siargao Hawker is the reliable evening option for Asian street food at fair prices. Loka does a bar and restaurant menu with a view, and Cloud8 is the dumpling and comfort-food answer after a long session.

The Cloud 9 boardwalk

Free to walk and best before 7am, when you will often have it to yourself. The viewing tower gives the wide angle over the reef that everyone recognises. It is the one thing non-surfers should still do here, and it takes twenty minutes. The Cloud 9 guide covers the tides and the tower in detail.

Watching the surf

Underrated as an activity. On a decent swell the lineup at Cloud 9 is a genuine spectacle, and the boardwalk exists specifically to watch from. Bring water and a hat, since there is no shade out on the jetty.

Learning to surf

Jacking Horse is a short paddle from the boardwalk and is the beginner wave most schools use. A one-hour Basic Surf 101 lesson is ₱820 and the two-hour version ₱1,640. A lesson at Line Up Surf Club is ₱1,500 and the 3-day Freshie course at Sinag ₱6,500 if you want to leave actually surfing.

Getting to the other breaks

A surf trip with Happy Islanders is ₱2,110 and takes you to whatever is working that day, which is the single best purchase for an intermediate here. Intermediate coaching and spot guiding is ₱2,340.

Flat-day options

When the swell drops, the tri-island hopping tour is ₱1,700 and leaves from GL, bouldering at Tropeak is ₱650, and The Valhalla Ritual at ₱3,276 is what a week of paddling eventually requires.

Cloud 9

A fast, hollow right-hander breaking over shallow reef. It is a genuinely serious wave: powerful, with a short take-off window and coral close underneath at low tide. Confident intermediates and above only, and best on a mid to high tide with real swell behind it.

Tuason Point

A left just north of Cloud 9, and the other well-known break in Catangnan. It handles size and works on a mid tide. Also for experienced surfers, and it gets territorial when it is good.

Jacking Horse

The beginner wave, a short paddle inside from the boardwalk. Softer, slower and over a mix of sand and reef, which is why every surf school runs its lessons here. Best on a higher tide.

Quiksilver, also called Cemetery

Between GL and Cloud 9, and the second common lesson spot. Mellow on a small day, punchier than it looks on a big one.

When it works

Swell builds from late August and peaks September through November, which is why the contests sit in that window. March to May is smaller and much better for learning. December to February is inconsistent.

For surf

September to November is the peak. Cloud 9 needs swell to do what it is known for, and that is when it arrives. It is also when the lineup is fullest and prices are highest.

For learning

March to June. Smaller, cleaner conditions, warm water, less crowding on the beginner waves, and lower accommodation prices. Most people who learn here and enjoy it come in this window.

Contest weeks

The Philippines Pro runs 31 October to 10 November 2026 as a World Surf League Championship Tour event. Expect Catangnan to be busy, loud and expensive, with parts of the boardwalk closed to the public during heats. Great to watch, hard to surf.

Wet season

Reef safety

The reef at Cloud 9 is shallow and sharp. Booties are worth it, cuts get infected quickly in the tropics, and antiseptic plus proper cleaning matters more here than plasters. Do not paddle out at low tide if you are unsure.

Cash

There is no reliable ATM in Catangnan. Draw cash in GL town before you come up, and expect the cafés and rental shacks to be cash only.

Lineup etiquette

Cloud 9 has a strong local crew and a real pecking order. Do not drop in, do not paddle straight to the peak on your first session, and give way. A guide for your first couple of surfs is money well spent.

Sun and shade

The boardwalk has almost no shade and the reef reflects hard. Reef-safe sunscreen, a hat and water, particularly if you are watching heats for a few hours.

Connectivity

Signal is decent along the strip and the cafés have workable wifi, though it slows in the evening. Brownouts hit here as everywhere on the island.

Can beginners surf Cloud 9?

Not the main peak. Cloud 9 breaks over shallow reef and is unforgiving of mistakes. Beginners surf Jacking Horse, a short paddle inside from the boardwalk, or Quiksilver on the road back to GL. Both are set up for lessons and both are genuinely fun.

Is the Cloud 9 boardwalk free?

Yes. You can walk out and up the tower without paying. It is at its best before 7am, both for light and for having it to yourself. During contest weeks sections are closed off for competition.

Should I stay in Catangnan or General Luna?

Catangnan if you surf and want to be at the wave for dawn. General Luna if you want restaurant choice, nightlife, a swimmable option nearby, and more places to stay. They are five minutes apart, so it is a preference rather than a hard call.

Can you swim at Cloud 9?

Not really. The shore is reef and it dries out at low tide. For swimming, head to Malinao, Santa Fe or take a boat to Daku.

How long should I spend in Catangnan?

Surfers commonly build a whole week around it. Everyone else needs a morning: walk the boardwalk at sunrise, have breakfast, then move on.

When is the 2026 surf contest at Cloud 9?

The Philippines Pro runs 31 October to 10 November 2026, the first World Surf League Championship Tour stop held at Cloud 9. It has been upgraded from a QS 6,000 event for the 2026 and 2027 seasons.

Everything is close. General Luna is five minutes south for food, rentals and nightlife, and Malinao is just past it for a quieter beachfront and a swim.

For a full day out, Pilar and the Magpupungko Rock Pools are about 45 minutes east, Sugba Lagoon is a boat ride from Del Carmen, and Pacifico up north has uncrowded surf if Cloud 9 is packed.
