Ideal conditions
What to look for before you commit to the boat fare
Swell direction
4-12+ ft East to Southeast swells. Due to it's location, Guiwan needs a big swell for the waves to wrap around the island and produce waves.
Wind direction
North to Northwest offshore winds. Guiwan can be a fun little spot when other breaks are blown out by Northeasterly winds.
Tide
Mid to high. Better with more water on the reef. Be careful of exposed rocks during low to mid tides.
How to get there
From GL, head west past SOS Gym to a T-intersection in Malinao. Turn right, pass Balay Malinawon, and keep left at the fork toward Union, the road winds through mountains and mangroves for about 5 km of scenery. At the intersection in Union town, turn right. Roughly 1 km on, look for a small "Paradise" sign on the left, usually with bikes parked on the bend. Stop there and follow the dirt track down to the beach. The path gets slippery in the rainy season, so take care. The Union side is quiet and rural, so options at the wave are limited. There are other nearby breaks within five minutes (including a local "Secret Spot") if Paradise isn't working. For food, stays and rentals you'll mostly head back toward General Luna.

The wave can be tricky to figure out at first and fast down the line. The proximity to shore, lack of current and average size make it a perfect spot for beginners.

Good
Guiwan does get overhead and barrels once or twice a year in perfect condition but is average for the most part. Bonus points for the amazing scenery.

One main peak and a highly competitive local lineup from sunup to sundown, particularly when other spots are blown out or too big.
