Mr. Sumo is a small Japanese restaurant on the Circumferential Road in the Solangon stretch of San Juan, a few steps from Dagsa and Monkey Business. Inside it is a clean, quiet air-conditioned room, with a few seats outside if you prefer the breeze, and it holds 4.5 stars from close to 500 Google reviews.
Sushi rolls are the main event. The volcano roll is the one regulars order every time, and the Philadelphia, mango, smoked salmon and rainbow rolls all get mentions, along with a house special tempura maki. Tuna sashimi and tataki are a good test of how fresh the fish is that day, and a sushi boat works for groups. The tuna poke bowl gets more mentions than any other dish, though it is not a big portion, so add a starter like gyoza or shrimp tempura. For something hot, the tonkotsu ramen, katsu curry, chicken cutlet with rice and slaw, and yaki udon cover it, and there are vegetarian options. WiFi is free and reliable.
Opening hours listed online are 11am to 10pm daily, and Google puts spend at ₱500 to ₱1,000 a head. Dinner fills up with both locals and tourists, so come mid-afternoon or early evening for a quieter table and order a few rolls to share.
